GEORGETOWN -- Her Majesty's Finest braved the rain Friday night to attend a special fundraiser hosted by Luke's Wings at cozy L2 Lounge located just off Cady's Alley.
After I had checked my weapon (umbrella) upon arrival and entered L2's celebrated inner sanctum, I was delighted to find that the normally chic lounge area had been turned into a make-believe casino for the night, including craps, blackjack, and roulette tables.
In keeping with the James Bond-inspired "Casino Royale" theme for the evening, guests were elegantly dressed in willowy cocktail dresses, tuxedos and suits, and military dress uniforms. The promise of a "Best Dressed Bond Girl" prize ensured that the women easily outclassed the men in the fashion department that night. The toy guns that were used as props by some contestants were nice touches indeed!
While the spirit of the evening was definitely one of playfulness and joviality, the true purpose of the event was to help raise funds to finance both the on-going programs and day-to-day operations of the non-profit. For those unfamiliar with the services provided by Luke's Wings, the organization provides travel planning assistance and airplane tickets to the families of the U.S. military's "wounded warriors" who are currently hospitalized at medical and rehabilitation centers scattered throughout the country and oftentimes located far-away from the soldiers' homes.
After most guests had arrived and had a chance to sip their complimentary "007 Martinis", Luke's Wings co-founder Fletcher Gill delivered some brief opening remarks thanking everyone for attending and talking a little bit about the non-profit's background and on-going mission. A heartfelt, first-hand recollection of the personal comfort and assistance provided by the organization was then recounted by an active-duty service member.
After a moving rendition of the national anthem, guests were then free to resume gambling and enjoying the other specialty drinks that were being offered. At the end of the night, the chips were counted and the luckiest gamblers walked away with a variety of prizes donated by local area businesses, including a private party at L2 Lounge, a designer fur from Miller's Furs, jewelry from Queen Bee Designs, and a handbag from Neiman Marcus.
