GEORGETOWN -- In 1963, the late Stuart C. Davidson opened the doors on a new Georgetown restaurant and bar known as Clyde's and, in the process, helped transform M Street from a shabby row of watering holes into the vibrant community it is today.

And to celebrate its 50th anniversary on Monday (a day that will officially be recognized as "Clyde's of Georgetown Day" in the District), the landmark establishment has planned a series of specials beginning at 8:00 a.m. with a breakfast that runs for two hours (until 10:00 a.m.) and will be completely free of charge.

Kir Royale

The festivities continue thereafter at 11:00 a.m. with a special menu that, in addition to including all of the usual fare, will also boast a series of items that were popular at Clyde's during the '60s and '70s. Dishes, each priced between $5 and $25, run the gamut from Baked Brie with Almonds to a Petit Filet Bearnaise to Beer Battered Shrimp and even a Foot-Long Hot Dog (served with spicy mustard, diced onions, and fries!).

Since the genesis of Clyde's opening was a 1962 decree by then President John F. Kennedy that enabled D.C. bars to serve hard liquor to standing patrons for the first time in some 45 years, drink specials will also be front and center during Monday's golden anniversary celebration.

Sidecar

Transporting guests back to the era when the Georgetown restaurant first opened, Brandy Alexanders, Sidecars, and Kir Royales will all be at the ready.

A brand new book, How We Do Business: Clyde’s Primer for Beating the Odds in the Restaurant Business will also be available for sale ($24.95), which charts the company's rise over the years in spite of the highly volatile nature of the industry (Clyde's has never closed or handed over a restaurant).
