NORTHWEST -- The some 100-person strong players, cheerleaders, and coaches belonging to Team Brunette had much to be thankful for yesterday, with their team prevailing for a second year in a row during the 2012 Blondes vs. Brunettes D.C. powderpuff football game.

Now in its eighth year, the playful, charity-minded flag football competition that got its start in Washington now counts sister chapters throughout the country, including in Texas, California, Illinois, and New York.

This year alone, D.C. participants managed to raise more than $110,000 from friends, family, and corporate sponsors thereby bringing the city’s cumulative total since the organization was founded to some $600,000+.

Factor in the additional close to $2 million raised by supporters in other cities and the scope and success of the organization quickly becomes awesomely apparent.

Returning to George Washington University’s Mt. Vernon Campus playing field on Saturday afternoon, Team Brunette was the first to put points on the scoreboard and never relinquished its lead.

There were some tense moments in the second half of the game as Team Blonde made a determined effort to turn the tide and reclaim the trophy that they so triumphantly earned back in 2010.

94.7 Fresh FM radio personality Tommy McFLY and 106.7 The Fan radio host Danny Rouhier were charged with calling the game throughout and even entertained the audience between plays with a humorous barrage of jokes and puns.

Ultimately, however, Team Brunette successfully fended-off their opponents’ substantial fourth quarter offense, with a 14-8 final score and clinched all related bragging rights for the next year.

Still, it was the National Capital Area Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association that walked away from the game as the biggest winner.

The money raised this year has already been earmarked to support the global nonprofit’s mission to eliminate Alzheimer disease, care and support for all affected, and reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

A heartfelt thanks is therefore owed to brunettes and blondes (and redheads) alike.
