GEORGETOWN -- Taking steps to save lives was as easy as sipping a cocktail on Thursday evening, as the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s young professionals chapter hosted its kick-off party for the non-profit’s annual 5k inside popular Georgetown nightspot George.

In the spirit of charity, the members-only venue temporarily waved its normally controlled door policy for the night in exchange for a voluntary contribution of $5 or $10 to the charity.

Participants in the 5k at Nationals Park on Sunday, September 30th were even treated to a complimentary drink, as a thank you for their on-going support.

Hosts Grant Allen, Josh Bachrach, Jesse Biggers, Stacy Hadeka, Caroline Howe, Reed Landry, Daniela Kelley, Katherine Kennedy, Cori Sue Morris, Scott Nguyen, Jana Sedlakova, and Rachel Williams were on-hand throughout to answer questions from guests and distribute pamphlets of information about the non-profit.

In addition to friends and family, a handful of Washington notables turned out in support of the event, including DC United players Mike Chabala and Chris Pontius.

The Prevent Cancer Foundation’s mandate – to stop cancer before it starts – sounds simple on the surface, but in reality is a herculean challenge. The organization has been funding cancer prevention research and early detection programs since 1985 to the tune of more than $125 million.

A royal sum that even King George would admire.
