NATIONAL MALL -- America’s front yard received a much needed charitable infusion on Saturday evening, as the L’Enfant Society hosted its fourth annual Ball On The Mall near the base of the Washington Monument.

As the signature annual fundraiser for the young professionals subgroup of the Trust for the National Mall, the L’Enfant Society drew more than 1,000 dapper guests to the sold-out event for an elegant evening of drinking (responsibly), dining, and dancing.

The festivities began early at 6:30 p.m. for the event’s most ardent fans, with a cocktail reception and gourmet dinner. Corporate partners, such as Time Warner, HBO, and Verizon, purchased tables in support of the gala and were rewarded with a dinner view that is nearly impossible to duplicate at any other time of the year.

Ticketholders to the late night dance party began to stream into a neighboring tent around 8:00 p.m. and were soon joined by dinner guests on the dance floor, as DJ Heather returned with a well-liked soundtrack that span more than three decades of hit songs.

All told the 2012 Ball On The Mall raised between $650,000-$750,000 which, in turn, will be turned over to the National Park Service to restore, revitalize, and preserve the National Mall, which stretches from the foot of the Capitol building past the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial and over to the Jefferson Memorial.

Counting more than 30 million visitors each year (more than Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon National Parks combined), the National Mall is literally being loved to death. Unable to cope with the staggering repair and maintenance backlog required to keep up with such crowds, the National Park Service is now faced with the herculean task of raising some $400 million for the park’s first major renovation in more than 35 years.

A monumental challenge, but one that Washingtonians surely had a lot of fun rising to the occasion in meeting on Saturday night!
