WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The wacky number crunchers over at the Internal Revenue Service released a treasure trove of data last week as part of the government’s quarterly Statistics of Income Bulletin. And less you not feel the urge to crunch through all 201 pages of the document, we did the heavy lifting for you and extracted a select group of interesting tidbits.

As we reported last week, Maryland has bragging rights as the home to most of the area’s billionaires (9 compared to Virginia’s 6 or D.C.’s sole billionaire). But Virginia has an overall larger number of wealthy residents, with some 49,000 cardinal-loving taxpayers worth $2 million or more (about 0.8% of the state's adult population).

By comparison, Maryland has a respectable 43,000 wealthy individuals and the District somehow manages to scrape by with a mere 3,000. All is not lost for Marylanders though, as even with 6,000 less millionaires living there, the Old Line State’s constituents still boast a higher net worth by some $61 million than their Virginia counterparts.

Regardless, Virginia has decidedly proven that it is a place both for lovers and millionaires.
