A cornerstone of Washington power spots to sip and sup,
701 Restaurant received a complete makeover last week that will ensure that it celebrates its 25th birthday in December with a fresh new look.
Famed D.C. restaurateur,
Ashok Bajaj, first opened the popular Penn Quarter eatery back in 1990 in order to capitalize on its prime location sandwiched between The White House and Capitol Hill.
Spearheaded by James Beard Award-nominated restaurant designer
Martin Vahtra of Projects Design Associates of New York, 701's most recent refresh introduces dramatic new paint colors and wall coverings, in addition to a commanding central wall sculpture.
Indeed, regulars will find it hard to steal their attention away from said sculpture, which consists of 20 large cracked eggshells -- each with a sparkling gold interior. Those that do will notice new banquettes clothed in Maharam fabrics of burgundy, blue, and gold, exposed wood tables, and even a new carpet that projects a playful pattern of bubbles that swirl around the floor.
Foodies, who are no doubt familiar with Knightsbridge Restaurant Group's popular Rasika West End location (also designed by Vahtra), will be quick to point out a few visual similarities, such as the 'bookshelf' motif that adorns the rear private dining room.
Speaking of private dining, perhaps the biggest change to 701's former layout made with the most recent makeover is the creation of a 30-seat private dining room in the space formerly occupied by the elevated lounge. This new oasis boasts its own private bar, floor-to-ceiling drapery for privacy, and a modern AV system to accommodate even the most stringent presentation requirements.
