Without even a hint of irony, it was a
Passenger who was firmly in the driver's seat at
Echostage yesterday evening.
The British folk rocker, born
Michael Rosenberg, was in town for the D.C. leg of his international 'Whispers' tour which has already made stops in nearly a dozen countries since the beginning of the year.
For those music lovers who have called Echostage home for a countless number of EDM acts, such as
David Guetta,
Benny Benassi, and
Avicii, Passenger's more soulful sound might have come as a surprise.
But there was scant evidence of such confusion on Wednesday evening, as the diverse crowd of teens, twentysomethings, parents, and even babies all swooned and crooned in unison to the music.
While Passenger is essentially a one man act, Rosenberg was far from alone on stage during the show. Physically present were fellow
Nettwerk Records artists
Stu Larsen and
The Once (who also both opened up the show).
And spiritually present was everyone from
Simon & Garfunkel to
Avicii, whose 'Sounds of Silence' and 'Wake Me Up' he, respectively, handily covered.
Of course, Passenger has long boasted a D.C. fan base. Ever since he opened for
Ed Sheeran back in 2012 at the 9:30 Club, his songs have been in constant rotation on local radio stations.
Indeed, his 'Whispers' continue to grow louder with each passing show.
